Jungah Choi, Hyunsuk Han | JNCIST 13(5) 593-604

Abstract : In recent years, there has been a growing disparity in students' foundational academic skills, the importance of personalized learning through AI-based programs that collect and analyze individual learning data via online platforms has become increasingly emphasized. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between students' initial knowledge status and their academic achievement in college-level mathematics courses, as facilitated by ALEKS, an online platform developed by McGraw-Hill Education. Seventy-nine participants were divided into three groups (high, medium, and low) based on a initial knowledge test. The results revealed significant differences in the completion of ALEKS assignments and final course grades groups among the different initial knowledge groups. While there were no significant differences in ALEKS usage time, midterm exam scores, quiz participation rates across the groups, there was a significant difference in final exam scores. This study confirms that initial knowledge in mathematics significantly influences students' academic performance. Additionally, the study found an increase in learning activities, particularly among low-performing students, through the use of AI-based learning programs. These findings suggest a need for further research into the effective use of ALEKS for low-performing students.

A Study on selection of general national road traffic volume survey section criteria

DaeCheol Han, Doyoung Jung | JNCIST 13(5) 605-613

Abstract : The domestic road traffic volume survey serves as essential data for the planning, construction, maintenance, and management of roads, as well as a foundational resource for various road and traffic-related studies. In particular, traffic volume data collectedpermanent survey points on national highways provide critical metrics for road planning and policy development, while also serving as key baseline data for enhancing the efficiency of road operation and management. However, there are currently issues such as missing permanent survey points in certain large sections, survey points that fail to represent the traffic characteristics of specific sections. These issues urgently require improvement. The goal of this study is to address these problems by deriving improvement measures to enhance the reliability of permanent survey point data. To develop the methodology, existing literature was thoroughly reviewed, and the main analysis technique employed was the paired sample t-test. Through this analysis, improvement measures were derived for three types of large sections, and a survey was conducted across 210 large sections of 14 national highway routes, resulting in 125 sections identified for improvement. If the improvement measures proposed in this study are applied to the permanent survey points, it is expected that the accuracy and representativeness of traffic volume statistics will be significantly enhanced. This, in turn, will contribute to the development of more reliable data, which can make a practical contribution to road planning, traffic policy formulation, and related research.

Estimating Vehicle-Specific Travel Distance Based on Mobile Communication Data for Carbon Emission Calculation

Jin-Guk Kim, Choong-Heon Yang | JNCIST 13(5) 615-623

Abstract : In this study, a methodology is proposed to estimate driving distance more accurately by vehicle type using communication data to calculate carbon emissions. Traditional methods based on historical data collection have limitations in estimating driving distance accurately. However, utilizing communication data allows for more detailed estimation of driving distance across the traffic network, contributing to a more precise calculation of carbon emissions. Although various traffic monitoring devices are currently used to estimate driving distances, it remains challenging to estimate the total driving distance by vehicle type according to road classification. This approach yields higher accuracy and reliability than traditional sample-based estimation methods. The results of this study can be used as critical foundational data for formulating national policies on greenhouse gas reduction and are expected to significantly improve the accuracy of carbon emission calculations in the road sector. In particular, the methodology based on mobile communication data improves vehicle-specific travel distance estimation and enhances spatiotemporal analysis capabilities for road-sector carbon emissions.

Study on Estimating Priority of Demand Factors for Hydrogen Car Activation

Ki-Won Lim, Hyung-Kyu Kim | JNCIST 13(5) 625-634

Abstract : Carbon emissions in the transportation sector are continuously increasing. The transportation industry is also suggesting the need for change in the means of transportation that are entirely dependent on oil. In relation to the expansion of the supply of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, the relative priorities of major factors in selecting hydrogen vehicles and the willingness and willingness to pay for hydrogen vehicles and vehicle energy conversionthe user's perspective will be selected and used as basic data for policies to activate the hydrogen economy in the future. In terms of the current actual vehicle purchase price and refueling method, only 12.4% of all vehicle purchasers are willing to purchase hydrogen vehicles compared to electric vehicles and fossil fuel (oil) vehicles. It was found that if the shortcomings of hydrogen vehicles are supplemented, this will significantly increase to 27.2%. The hierarchy for selecting priorities was designed as a two-tier structure, and the first tier was divided into three vehicle performance items such as convenience related to refueling while the driver purchases the vehicle, cost incurred when purchasing the vehicle, and driving distance after one refueling. The analysis results showed that support in terms of cost, such as maintenance and vehicle purchase, was the most necessary itemthe perspective of actual users of hydrogen vehicles. On the other hand, factors that reduce convenience after purchase, such as charging time and distance, showed relatively low support priorities. In order to activate hydrogen vehicles, it is necessary to implement both policy support for vehicle purchasers and policies that can support continuous operation after purchase.
